When reading on iPad 2 or viewing the Maps application you might need to lock the screen orientation so that it is fixed to horizontal or vertical.  Here's how to lock it:

1. Click twice on the Home button.

2. Now flick the bottom of the screen from left to right.

3. You will see a screen lock icon appears along with some other iPod controls which you could use.
