How to fix error 500 internet server error after you have installed JoomSEF extension on the Joomla website.

After installing the Joomla website, I dive straight in to install the JoomSEF component. The installation went well with no error message. I then go ahead to create a first category and a first article. Immediately, I refresh the page and try to click on the new link, and bang, I get the error message:

500 Internal Server Error

Here is what I did to fix it.

1. First go into the Site > Global Configuration > Click on Site tab.

2. Under SEO Settings:

  • Set Search Engine Friendly URLs to Yes.
  • Set Use URL rewriting to Yes.

3. Now go to the root installation folder of your Joomla site. There should be a .htaccess file and htaccess.txt. When I check the .htaccess file there was just one line in the file, and it was create by the JoomSEF installation. I deleted the .htaccess file and then I rename the htaccess.txt to .htaccess.

After renaming the file I try the site again and everything works as expected.
