If you would like to develop some Joomla template, then it would be easier if you install a Joomla website on your local Windows 7 computer to test it out. Here is a step by step guide showing you how to install Joomla on Windows 7. The easiest way to install Joomla and get running quickly is to first intall XAMPP server and then install Joomla. 1. First download and install XAMPP. Start up XAMPP and ensure the Apache and MySql service is running. 1. Download the latest version of Joomla. 2. Now unzip the files into the XAMPP folder. All hosting files are stored in the htdocs folder of the XAMPP server. Go into the htdocs folder and create a new subfolder, give it a name. In this example I created a joomla folder. So the path would be C:\xampp\htdocs\joomla. I then unzip the joomla zip files into the joomla folder.
3. Then open up your web browser either Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or others, then put in the URL address bar: http://localhost:8080/joomla/. Please note of the port number. Your port number maybe different. The XAMPP default installation uses port 80. So you might have to use this URL http://localhost:80/joomla/ 4. On the first installation wizard screen, select a language of choice. Then click on Next.
5. On the pre-Installation check screen, ensure you have pass all the necessary settings. Then click on Next.
6. Read the License agreement and if you accept click on Next. 7. Fill in the Connection Settings. Then click on Next.
8. Next, on the FTP Configuration screen, fill in the FTP connection detail, if you are not using FTP you can skip this and just click on Next. 9. Under the Configuration Screen, Fill in your website name, admin email and password. If you like you could also install the Sample Data by clicking on the Install Sample Data button. Click on Next when you are done.
10. On the Finish screen, click on the Remove installation folder button to complete the process. 11. Finally, you could click on the Site and Administrator button to browse the default site installation.
Upon successful installation of the Joomla site, your screen should look similar to the below.
