Learn how you can improve the Joomla site SEO with rel tag nofollow link.

Joomla is a great open source CMS which allows you to generate dynamic content. When populating the content you may have a link that is point to an external website. In the case when you are pointing to a bad neighborhood website, you could accidentally damage your site ranking. Search engine such as Google or Yahoo does not like it when it see your site have too many outgoing links, especially to those bad website.

If you implement the rel=nofollow in the anchor link tag, then Google search engine will ignores those anchor link and hence will not hurt your site reputation with the search engine.

There are many third party plugin which you can acquire for your Joomla site, however in this tutorial I will go through the two free components Marco's noFollow and Artio JoomSEF.

Download JoomSEF or Marco's noFollow plugin and then install them as you would with other plugins.

JoomSEF configuration

1. After installation, click on Components > ARTIOJoomSEF > Configuration.

2. From JoomSEF Configuration screen, click on SEO tab and ensure the Nofollow external links radio box is set to Yes.

Marco's noFollow

This guide is in Joomla 1.7.3.

1. After a sucessful installation, click on Extensions > Plug-in Manager.

2. Under the column Plug-in Name click on Content - Marco's noFollow.

3. From the Details section, ensure you select Enabled from the Enabled drop down list.

4. From Basic Options section, set the Change external links to one of the following options:

  • Force No Follow
  • Set No Follow, if no rel specified

At this point, if you like, you could also change other settings, such as what the system will do when the user click on the link, apply your own css and etc.
