Enable Remote Desktop remotely via registry key

If you are sitting from one location and wish to connect to another computer from another location how would you remote desktop to that computer if that computer doesn't have remote desktop switch on.

Normally the way you would enable remote desktop is to go into System Properties click on the Remote Desktop tabs and in the Remote Desktop panel you would select Allow users to connect remotely to this computer.

But if you are not sitting at that computer then you wont be able to turn it on so another way to do it is to connect to the registry and turn it on.

Here are the steps to turn on Remote Desktop if you are not sitting at the computer that you want to connect to.

  • Fireup the registry editor (eg. regedt32 or regedit from run command)

  • Find the key fDenyTSConnections (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server)
Double click on fDenyTSConnections key and change the value from 1 to 0. Setting 0 is to enable and 1 is to disable remote desktop.

  • Close the registry editor and try to connect to that computer. You may need to restart the computer if the change does not take effect immediately.
